How to Check Car Oil

Wiping Off Oil Dip Stick

Like most Chilton drivers, you love your car. Want your car to run in optimal condition? Of course you do! A good starting point is learning how to check car oil. Car oil is responsible for keeping your car engine healthy. If your engine is the heart of your car, then oil is its blood. Oil keeps a car’s engine lubricated, preventing unnecessary wear and tear. Learning how to check car oil also helps prevent engine block buildup, avoiding potential overheating.

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

First, check your owner’s manual to find out if your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or RAM has a traditional dipstick or an electronic monitor. Newer models typically use electronic monitors while older models have a dipstick. If you have a dipstick from the good ol’ days, you’ll need to check the oil manually. Here’s how:

  • To prevent injury, the car engine should be off and cold.
  • To ensure the reading is accurate, your car needs to be on level ground.
  • After the hood is open and the dipstick is found, pull the dipstick out and wipe off the end (a clean rag or paper towel will do).
  • Place the dipstick all the way back in and pull it back out to read the oil level.

You’ve successfully checked the oil level in your car; now you can hit the Appleton roads in confidence!

Adding Car Oil to Your Car

Dipsticks have maximum and minimum marks, usually indicated by notches or abbreviations. If the oil is beneath the minimum level, you should add oil. After purchasing the grade of car oil recommended in your car manual, you’ll need to remove the oil cap, usually at the top of the engine. Slowly add a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve added enough.
