Located on the eastern side of the state, not far from the shores of Lake Winnebago, the city of Chilton, WI is an excellent base from which to reach some of the best nature reserves, state parks, and hiking trails in the region. Whether you are looking for a short trek in the woods or a challenging hike, we have put together a list of the best destinations you can reach in just a couple of hours by car.

1. Killsnake State Wildlife Area

Spanning a territory of more than 7,000 acres, the Killsnake State Wildlife Area is one of the best hiking spots in eastern Wisconsin. With various hiking and walking trails, it is a popular destination among day-trippers from Milwaukee, Chilton, Green Bay, and other nearby towns and cities. If you are looking for the nearest location to go for a hike, the Killsnake State Wildlife Area is your best option.

Getting to the entrance of this wildlife area from downtown Chilton takes about 10 minutes by car, driving along route US-151 N. Once you are in the site, you will easily find the different trails, which feature moderate terrains and go through hundreds of acres of open prairies and beautiful landscapes. Apart from hiking, other popular activities in the area include picnicking, hunting, cross-country skiing, birdwatching, as well as kayaking, and canoeing on the Manitowoc River.

2. Kettle Moraine State Forest

The Kettle Moraine State Forest spans more than 55,000 acres and features 250 miles of hiking and walking trails. Managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, it consists of several sections. From the city of Chilton, the closest one is the Northern Unit, which is located south of the small town of Glenbeulah and features several attractions, including an observation tower, a campground, a boat launch, several beaches, and well-maintained picnic areas.

Getting to the Kettle Moraine State Forest from Chilton takes a little over half an hour by car, driving south along WI-32 and WI-57. Once you are here, it is a good idea to stop at the entrance and ask one of the guards for a map of the area. Some of the most popular paths for hikers include the Ice Age Trail with a length of almost seven miles and the Scuppernong Hiking Trail System.

3. Brillion State Wildlife Area

Located just 13 miles north of the Chilton city center, the Brillion State Wildlife Area is another prime spot for both amateur and experienced hikers from all over the country. This wildlife area covers a territory of almost 5,000 acres and features more than seven miles of trails passing through beautiful viewpoints, prairies, wetlands, and agricultural fields. Apart from hiking and walking, the Brillion State Wildlife Area is a popular place for canoeing, birdwatching, hunting, camping, and picnicking.
